The National Centre for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alerts (Cemaden) - a body linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) participated in the 3rd Workshop of the Working Group on Global Floods, held Maryland, in the United States, between the 4th and 6th March. The Brazilian hydrology research analyst for Cemaden, Graziela Balda Scofield, attended the event.
This annual meeting, which was co-organised by the EUs Joint Research Centre (JRC), Brazils partner in the Dialogue on Disaster Risk Reduction, aims to strengthen links between scientists and technicians from various institutions engaged in monitoring and forecasting flooding around the planet. Besides Cemaden and JRC, the World Bank, NASA, U.S. universities and other international organisations were also represented. Besides monitoring and forecasting, discussions also included modeling and the impacts of floods, as well as the need to bring together theory and practice in the field.
For CEMADEN, a major goal was to learn about tools that can be implemented in Brazil. "The trip was really worthwhile. We discovered new products and satellite-derived data that may assist us in monitoring and forecasting floods in the future," said Graziela.
The Brazilian scientist presented a case study on the use of the Global Flood Detection System (GDFS) for monitoring floods in Brazil. Still under experimentation by CEMADEN, this system uses satellite observations to detect and map flooding around the globe and holds great promise as an ally in fighting floods and their consequences.
Brazils participation in the workshop is part of the action in the Dialogue on Disaster Risk Reduction, provided for in the 6th Call of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. The action will be followed through with a technical mission of its participants to Italy, in March and April, when they will work alongside members of the Joint Research Centre (EU).
