The Secretariat of Cultural Policies of the Ministry of Culture (MINC) organised the International Seminar on Information Systems and Digital Culture Collections, between 11 and 13 March. The meeting was held in the István Jancsó auditorium of the Brasiliana-USP Library, and showed to 100-strong participants several possibilities in the areas of implementation, coordination and interaction for digital archive systems.
The ultimate goal of the seminar was to enable the exchange of experiences and mutual support to promote the creation of archives and facilitated their access by the community. It happened in the context of the presentation of the National Information and Cultural Indicators System(SNIIC), the first of its kind focused on Culture in Brazil. "Its implementation method is innovative as it counts on the support of society for the formation of the database," explains the general coordinator for Digital Culture, of the Ministry of Culture, José Murilo Junior Carvalho. "Well map libraries, museums and other collections that are being digitalised," he says.
As this field involves various technological and organisational challenges, Brazils cooperation with the European Union is focused on the exchange of successful practices that have overcome those challenges. Presentations included Europeana, a multilingual digital collection that includes works from 27 European countries. Another highlight was the work of Brasiliana-USP itself, which emerged in the online environment before even having physical facilities.
"We have tried to bring together the Brazilian institutions to listen to foreign experiences and have designed a common plan for the digitalisation of collections," says José Murilo. The seminar, which is part of the activities of the EU-Brazil Dialogue on Cultural Policies, was deemed a success by the organisers. "We had many compliments, especially regarding the high level of discussion," he added.
