In November, civil servants from Centro Nacional de Monitoramento e Alertas de Desastres Naturais – CEMADEN [Brazilian National Centre for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disaster], Eduardo Mario Mendiondo, General Coordinator, and Luiz Marcelo Mattos Zeri, Adjunct Researcher, visited the Joint Research Centre (JRC), in Ispra, Italy. The technical mission is part of the Brazil-Europe Collaborative Action for the Prevention of Natural Disasters, sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project.
Brazilian researchers visited the facilities of two JRC institutes: the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES), responsible for climate risk management, and the Institute for the Protection and Security of the Citizen (IPSC), which operates in the area of crisis management and global security. During the visits, three topics developed by the action were addressed: Advanced forecast of extreme hydrological events: floods, droughts and coastal vulnerability; management at the previous stage to that of crisis and disaster; and hydrological extremes and water security in face of environmental changes, and related trainings.
According to Eduardo Mario Mendiondo, the mission enabled the formulation of a strategy for institutional visits involving CEMADEN and JRC staff. The idea is to promote new scientific, technological and innovative products aimed at reducing the risks of disasters. “Access to the methodologies developed by JRC will measure and validate our studies.” Moreover, according to CEMADEN General Coordinator, the integration of warnings and databases collected by both institutions will ensure that more qualified work is being done.
