The tool used by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) to monitor forest patterns from space images was the central theme of the workshop conducted by European specialist Peter Vogt. During the three-day course participants were introduced to the GuidosToolbox software and its applications. This event was sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra).
Twenty-three professionals carrying out forest inventory activities convened for the course in Curitiba, between 4 and 6 August. This activity comprises the Action Geotechnology and Landscape Ecology: experiences involving their application in the context of the National Forest Inventory.
The workshop was attended by representatives from institutions such as the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), Paraná Energy Company (Copel), the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater) and the Departments of Agriculture and Supply (SEAB / PR) and of the Environment and Water Resources (SEMA / PR) of the State of Paraná.
Brazil’s Forest Inventory - The main objective of this action, of which the workshop is a component, is to develop methodologies to map, monitor and analyse the landscape of Landscape Sampling Units (UAPs), the geospatial component of Brazil's National Forest Inventory (IFN-BR). Coordinated by the Brazilian Forest Service (SFB), the IFN-BR is a national-level initiative of fundamental importance for understanding and monitoring Brazil’s forest resources, whether native or planted.
The initiative also involved a technical mission to the headquarters of the JRC in Ispra, Italy, and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Rome, and web-based technical discussions to detail the suggested and agreed methodologies and the effective execution of activities.
