The capital of the Brazilian north-eastern state of Sergipe, Aracaju, played host to the workshop entitled Thinking Social Technologies. This was part of the activities promoted by the Science and Technology Sector Dialogue, whose partner institutions are, on Brazils side, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), and on the EU side, the DG Investigation and Innovation. The event was held on the 6th and 7th of October to discuss and establish priority areas in the fields of science and technology for the purposes of social inclusion. The outcome of this meeting was a document containing those priorities, with a view to establishing a cooperation timetable.
The workshop was attended by approximately 25 participants, including representatives from government, non-governmental and civil society organisations, and was sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility and promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technologys Secretariat of Science and Technology for Social Inclusion (SECIS), which has maintained a pragmatic and affirmative dialogue with the European Commission in order to establish a solid platform for scientific cooperation with a view to promoting the use of social technologies.
Social technologies are defined as "replicable products, techniques and methodologies developed in interaction with the community and represent effective solutions for social transformation." During the two-day meeting, participants discussed possibilities and priorities for potential bilateral scientific cooperation in this field.
Social technologies constitute a topic of increasing interest to the DG Investigation and Innovation, which recently published a call for participation in projects through the Specific International Cooperation Action (SICA) mechanism, funded by the European Commission.
