On 2 and 3 July 2013, the Secretariat for Human Rights of the Presidency of the Republic (SDH/PR) held in Brasilia the Brazil-European Union Seminar on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of the Homeless Population. Sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, the event featured presentations and discussions on social assistance policies and strategies targeting this population.
Attending the event were Ms. Maria do Rosario Nunes, the SDH Chief Minister, Ambassador Ana Paula Zacarias, head of the EU Delegation in Brazil , Mr. Antero Ali Samuel, the national director of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, and Mr. Samuel Rodrigues, a member of the National Movement of the Homeless Population, among other representatives from the government, social movements, European embassies and international charities.
The panel discussions began with an analysis of the development of the National Policy for the Homeless Population and the strategies to address the violations of the rights of this population. Subsequently, experts sponsored by the EU-Brazil Support Facility and other guest speakers discussed integrated policies to safeguard such rights. Experiences in sheltering and housing, as well as strategies for health and social care closed the interactive sessions.
"Our assessment of the event is very positive, both in terms of turnout and quality of the discussions", said Mr. Pedro Henrique Angoti, SDH technical adviser and seminar organiser. Now, the Secretariat staff is working on a final report to be published in July, compiling the main themes discussed during the event.
