Representatives of the EUs Joint Research Centre (JRC) were in Brazil to expand bilateral cooperation in smart grid electricity. On 15 and 16 May, they took part in the 5th International Seminar on Smarts Grids, held in São Paulo. The event and the participation of European technicians are part of an action provided for in the sixth call from the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility.
Organised by APTEL (Association of Proprietary Companies of Infrastructure and Private Telecommunications Systems), the seminar was attended by representatives from various ministries, the private sector, Mackenzie University, from APTEL itself, and other partner organisations. Panel discussions promoted extensive debates on important aspects related to smart grids, the technologies involved, environmental impacts and regulations.
For the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), the focus was on the potential involvement of smart grids in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. "We believe that smart grids contribute in this respect, by enabling energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy," said Mr. Flavio Gonçalves, MMAs Technical Secretary for Climate Change and Environmental Quality.
In addition to attending the seminar, in the last week of activities Brazilian and EU experts also visited three pilot projects for smart grids: in Sete Lagoas (MG), Mogi das Cruzes (SP) and Buzios (RJ). The visits brought to a close the great cycle of events included in the dialogue between Brazil and the European Union in this field.
"The participants were very satisfied with the results of the action," said Mr. Flávio Gonçalves. He explained that there is interest on both sides in continued cooperation and that a report is being produced as a result of the work done so far. The publication is scheduled for the end of June.
