As part of an initiative held in the context of the 8th Call of the Sector Dialogues Support Project, the city of Goiânia (GO) hosted the “4th National Symposium on Forest Inventory”, from June 28 to July 1st. This event was the result a partnership between the Serviço Florestal Brasileiro (SFB) [Brazilian Forest Service] and Embrapa Florestas, whose goal was to increase awareness on the subject and present an overview of the Inventário Florestal Nacional (IFN) [National Forest Inventory] in Brazil and other different countries.
According to SFB General Director, Raimundo Deusdará Filho, the IFN plays a relevant social role in raising the population awareness about environmental preservation. According to him, it was important that such a meeting was held in Goiás, given the location of the State and its typical vegetation, the Cerrado or Brazilian savannah, the second largest biome in Brazil.
“We have the two largest databases for tropical countries - the Brazilian National Forest Inventory and the National Rural Environmental Registry. We are now headed towards a new era for forest management”, he pointed out during the opening ceremony of the symposium. “Our objective is for the inventory to become more didactic. That is to say, to have an inventory that effectively serves to promote public policies”, he adds.
“We are happy with this event and the opportunity to renew partnerships”, Yeda Maria, researcher at Embrapa Florestas, said after a technical cooperation agreement between the entity and the SFB was signed. According to her, the parties to the agreement expect this partnership to grow and become stronger.
Giovana Rocha Veloso, Deputy Director of the Sector Dialogues Support Project, also participated in the opening ceremony of the event. She pointed out that the partnership with the SFB and EMBRAPA Florestas started in 2014 and that the results being presented are the outcome of this successful partnership between EMBRAPA, the Sector Dialogues Project and the Joint Research Centre (JRC).?
Pedro Antônio Arraes, President of the Office in Goiás of the Agência Goiana de Assistência Técnica e Extensão Rural e Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMATER) [Brazilian Agency for Technical Assistance and Rural Extension and Research], who also attended the symposium, said: “We must innovate to provide sustainable solutions, and a project like this one can lend a relevant contribution”.
The President of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), Dr. Orlando Amaral, also complimented SFB and Embrapa Florestas for the initiative. “This work is very important and complex, when one considers the size of Brazil”, he added. According to him, the IFN proves that it is possible for productivity and sustainability to walk hand in hand.
IFN:
During the talk given at the opening session of the symposium, Joberto Freitas, from the SFB, presented an overview of the Inventário Florestal Nacional (IFN) [National Forest Inventory] and the Brazilian scenario. The IFN started in 1980, by collecting information on wood inventories, and it resumed activities in 2005. The SFB was created in 2006, and data gathering is expected to be completed this year. Freitas also highlighted the importance of IFN in Brazil. “Our forest sector corresponds to 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and 55% of the national territory is covered by forests”, he said.
