On 24 April, the Ministry of Environment (MMA) held a Seminar on Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, in Brasilia, which had the participation of energy and environment experts from Brazil and the European Union. The event discussed several topics, including policies to promote energy efficiency, commitments for adaptation to climate change in Europe and Brazil and the current status of the relevant legislation in both territories. Also highlighted were Brazilian and European projects developed under the incentives of public policies relating the energy-efficiency perspective with climate change.
As part of this action, promoted by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, experts from both partners presented studies that had been developed in this field and took on board the contributions of participants to add to their reports. The publication of these studies, scheduled for May, will bring recommendations to the public sector on policy implementation and partnerships among agents related to energy efficiency and climate change.
According to Ms. Alexandra Maciel, MMA infrastructure analyst and one of the event organisers, the seminar was very successful. "We discussed solutions to integrate public policies for energy efficiency with criteria linked to climate change," she said. The analyst pointed out that the debate was important to identify barriers and problems encountered in this integration and help unite the relevant actors. "It was a seed that was planted so that the discussion will permeate both the environmental as well as the energy fields. We have realised that the two sectors will need to work together, " she said.
