The European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project held the seminar “Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Inspection and Compliance Assessment System in the European Union and Brazil", from April 5 to 6, in Brasília. This activity is part of the action of the same name coordinated by the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento - MAPA [Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply].
The following delegates were present at the opening session of the seminar: Giovana Rocha Veloso, National Deputy Director of the Sector Dialogues Project; Luís Eduardo Pacifici Rangel, MAPA's Secretary for Agricultural Defense; Fábio Florêncio Fernandes, Director of the Department for the Inspection of Plant-Source Products at MAPA; and Fátima Chieppe Parizzi, General Coordinator for Plant-Source Food Quality at MAPA.
The seminar counted on the participation of four European experts: Ian Hewett, Change Director at the UK Rural Payment Agency; Liliana Annovazzi-Jakab, Economic Affairs Officer at the Agricultural Quality Standard Unit of the United Nations' Economic Commission for Europe; Ulrike Bickelmann, Division Head of the German Federal Office for Agriculture and Food; and Mafalda Cristina Galantinho Antunes dos Santos, Officer at the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture and expert for the Sector Dialogues Project.
The event presented the state of the art on the theme and illustrated, in a practical and direct manner, techniques and procedures adopted for the inspection and quality control of fresh fruit and vegetables pursuant to EU Regulation No. 543/2011. “Each participant was able to expand his views on the European legislation on the matter, differentiating the general rule, used by all member states, from the specific rule of each State”, said the person in charge of the operation, André Luiz Bispo Oliveira, Federal Agricultural and Livestock Inspector at MAPA.
Other activities
On April 7 and 8, the European delegation visited the city of São Joaquim, in Santa Catarina, where a seminar on similarities and differences among the plant classification models adopted in Europe and Brazil was also held. The experts also made on-site visits to apple orchards and postharvest centers in the municipality, where more than 90% of Brazilian apples are produced. “This experience consolidated the knowledge acquired at the seminar, enabling the participants to understand how apples would be classified if the European model were to be adopted”, explained André Luiz Bispo.
