The National Centre for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alerts (Cemaden), of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), has just completed a major international exchange in the field of flood forecasting. In March and April, two representatives of the body were at the headquarters of the Joint Research Centre of the European Union, in Ispra, Italy, to learn more about the European experience and collect information to help improve the work being carried out in Brazil.
Mr. Marcio Augusto Ernesto de Moraes, research analyst in hydrology, and Mr. Diego Oliveira de Souza, operator in meteorology, participated in this mission, which is part of an action provided for by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. During the trip, the Brazilian specialists could delve into the European & Global Flood Awareness System (EFAS and GloFAS), which are flood forecasting modeling systems at continental and global levels.
"The mission was very important because we collected knowledge that can be used here at Cemaden," said Mr. Moraes. These models, already widely used in Europe, are being presented to Brazil for future implementation, respecting, of course, the particular climate features in the country. When operation begins, the Brazilian system will be fed by data collected by the Centre for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (CPTEC / INPE) and will provide information and warnings for all regions nationwide.
