In May, during a mission to Europe, Thales Sehn Körting, a researcher from the Divisão de Processamento de Imagens (DPI) [Image Processing Division] of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) [National Institute for Space Research], discussed the results obtained with the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL), a tool which maps built-up areas in the world by means of satellite-generated data. These activities were carried out in the context of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project.
In Italy, the researcher visited the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s science and knowledge service, comprised of research and development institutes, where he compared the preliminary results with other database. According to him, this work will make it possible to adjust parameters and refine results. Emiliano Ferreira Castejon, DPI Senior Technologist and Leila Maria Garcia Fonseca, General Coordinator for Earth Observation (OBT, Portuguese acronym for Earth Observation), also participated in the mission.
According to Körting, images captured by the CBERS-4 satellite, developed by INPE in partnership with China, were used to assess the execution potential of the system. “These two tasks reinforce the need for continuing cooperation between both institutes, and the Sector Dialogues mechanism is an outstanding alternative to make this partnership feasible”, he pointed out. According to him, the system will make it possible to “map built-up areas throughout Brazil and maintain an updated database”.
Also in the context of this mission, Leila Fonseca presented research developed at OBT/INPE to an audience comprised of several JRC research groups. The event enabled participants to exchange experiences with other groups, such as those involved in forest research projects, forest fire mapping and image processing.
