A delegation comprised of seven federal public servants toured several cities in Portugal, England and Holland to visit institutions that deal with systematized cultural information and digitized collections. The mission is part of the work activities developed by the action Information Systems and Digital Cultural Collections, sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project and coordinated by the Ministério da Cultura - MinC [Ministry of Culture].
The delegation was comprised of the following members: Ângela Bittencourt, Coordinator for the Digital Library of the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional [National Library of Brazil Foundation]; Ana Lígia Medeiros, Coordinator for the Center for Memory and Information of the Casa de Rui Barbosa [House of Rui Barbosa] Foundation; Dalton Martins, Professor at the Information Management Department of the School of Information and Communication of the Federal University of Goiás; and the following MinC public servants: Cyntia Uchoa, General Coordinator for Cooperation and Bilateral Affairs; Geyzon Dantas, Coordinator for Digital Culture; José Murilo Júnior, General Coordinator for Digital Culture; and Leonardo Germani, General Coordinator for Monitoring and Cultural Information.
At the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, the Brazilian group visited the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Portuguese Cinematheque, the State Department for Science, Technology and Higher Education, the Arquivo Nacional Torre do Tombo [Torre do Tombo National Archives], the National Library of Portugal and the Mário Soares Foundation. In London, England, the Brazilian representatives visited the British Library, the British Film Institute, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, The National Archives and Jisc. The last stage of the trip was dedicated to visits to certain institutions in Amsterdam and The Hague, in the Netherlands: The National Library of the Netherlands, the National Archives of the Netherlands, Kennisland and the Waag Society.
According to Cyntia Uchoa, the operating officer for this action, the technical visits provided the participants with the opportunity to acknowledge the European experience in the matter and compare it to the Brazilian scenario. “We sensed the need to foster the development of a Brazilian expertise on the concepts and technologies guiding our cultural information systems, particularly, the metadata models for libraries, collections and museums, as well as the interoperability arrangements based on interconnected data”, she explained. According to Cyntia Uchoa, the mission was extremely relevant as it became a starting point for the preparation of a national policy on digital culture.
