In February, the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project sent to Europe participants in the action Implementation of the Observatory for Innovation in Biotechnology in Brazil and its Interaction with the EU Bioeconomy Observatory – Phase II, coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). The activity reinforced the exchange of information and the dialogue between experts from both observatories, thereby furthering the development of both initiatives.
The Brazilian delegation was comprised of the following members: Luiz Henrique Mourão do Canto Pereira, General Coordinator for Biotechnology and Health of the MCTI; Maguida Fabiana da Silva, Technologist in Science and Technologist of the Office of the General Coordination for Biotechnology and Health of the MCTI; Cecília Leite Oliveira, Director of Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia – IBICT [Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology]; Geraldo Bueno Martha Junior, Coordinator of Labex-USA, a research program of Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária – EMBRAPA [Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation] in the United States; and Bernardo Silva, CEO of the Associação Brasileira de Biotecnologia Industrial – ABBI [Brazilian Industrial Biotechnology Association].
The first item of the mission program was a visit to Ispra, Italy, where the delegates visited the Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), a research institution responsible for the EU Bioeconomy Observatory. On that occasion, JRC experts spoke about the lessons learned during the implementation of the European laboratory, and about the plans to proceed with this initiative. The explanation was followed by discussions on possible areas for mutual collaboration.
Another activity of the program was the workshop “A global view of Bio-based Industries: Assessing and monitoring their economic importance and future developments”, held in Seville, Spain. “It was an important occasion for exchanging experiences between the European and Brazilian experts involved in themes pertaining to bioeconomy and biotechnology, particularly, with respect to the monitoring and assessment of biological industries”, said Maguida Fabiana.
Luiz Henrique Mourão pointed out the importance of the mission. “It was essential to strengthen cooperation between Brazilians and Europeans involved in this theme. According to the Brazilian delegation, the mission was instrumental in facilitating the understanding of the new structure of the EU Bioeconomy Observatory and enabled discussion on new potential areas for cooperation involving Brazil and the European Union”, he said.
