The Ministry of Environment (MMA) organised a technical mission to the European Union between 6 and 15 April to exchange experiences in the control and regulation of chemicals. During the trip, sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, three analysts from the Environment Ministry and the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) met with strategic partners to discuss the issue.
Upon arrival, they visited the office of the EU Directorate General for Environment (DG Environment) in Brussels. Then, in Dortmund, Germany, the delegation visited the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA). The Swedish Chemicals Agency (KEMI), in the greater Stockholm area, and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki, Finland, were the other destinations.
The meetings were fundamental for the Brazilian representatives to learn about the standards of the European institutions regarding the regulation of chemicals, how risks are assessed, how control and restrictions are enforced and how the relevant legislation is created. The information gathered will inform the discussions that will take place during a seminar on the subject, to be held in Brazil in May.
"It was great to be there, because just by reading about it we do not have a full understanding of the work done in the EU," says Ms, Marilia de Almeida, from the MMA, one of the mission participants. For her, the meetings served as inspiration for the organisation of the seminar. Ms. Cayssa Marcondes, also from the MMA, adds: "A discussion will be conducted at the national level; we will have more concrete results to add to the debate." Brazilian experts and European guest speakers will be in attendance.
