A group of experts from Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa participated in the “International Workshop on Sustainable Cities and National Policies for Urban Development in the Context of the New Post-2015 Urban Agenda”, which took place in November, in London, England. Sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, two representatives from the Ministério das Cidades [Ministry of Cities] attended the event: Júnia Santa Rosa, Director of the Department for Institutional Development of the National Secretariat for Housing and Amanda Alves Olalquiaga, Technical Advisor for the same department.
The workshop addressed matters related to international agendas on sustainable development and climate changes and their interfaces with national policies on urban development. Another important discussion addressed the challenges imposed by the obligation to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Post-2015 Agenda, whose purpose is to serve as a guideline for national policies and international cooperation activities for the next fifteen years.
The first results of the documents being prepared were also presented and discussed during the event, as an outcome of the European Union-Brazil Dialogue on the theme. “The discussions were important inputs for an ongoing dialogue. They also aimed at adjusting agendas and strengthening the presence of this theme in the preparation process for the Habitat III Conference, which will take place in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016”, informed Amanda Alves.
The representatives of the Ministry of Cities also participated in technical activities which included a visit to Letchworth Garden City and a meeting with the Planning Officer of the Letchworth Heritage Foundation to learn about urban design experiences with safety principles; a meeting in the Building Research Establishment (BRE) on project and safety principles for social housing enterprises; a meeting with Antônio Sampaio, Associate Researcher for Safety and Development of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, to learn about prospective collaborations in the area of safety as related to the production of social housing; a meeting with professors from the Architectural Association School; and a meeting with the Transparency International Organization and with Cities Alliance, aiming at collaborating with actions related to the production of social housing.
