The Unidade Florestas [Forestry Unit] of the Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA) [Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation] held the workshop “The Role Played by Model Forests in Mitigating Climate Risks”, from April 25 to 29, in the city of Caçador, in the State of Santa Catarina. The event is part of the action “Brazilian National Forest Inventory: Landscape Analysis and Forest Monitoring in Connection with Climate Change”, held in the context of the 8th Call of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project.
The workshop was attended by Spanish researchers Jose Antonio Lucas, Head of the Servicio Territorial de Medio Ambiente de Soria [Territorial Service for the Environment of Soria], and Rodrigo Gómez, Head of the Information Technology Division of the Centro de Servicios y Promoción Forestal y de su Industria de Castilla y León - CESEFOR [Service Centre for the Promotion of Forestry and Related Industries in Castille and León], in Spain. They shared with EMBRAPA Forestry Unit researchers experiences from the development project of the Urbión Model Forest in Spain. As a result, it was possible to establish a comparison between the Spanish forest and the Caçador Model Forest, which follows the same philosophy.
In addition to the meetings to discuss the matter, workshop activities also included visits to different places, such as the Caçador Model Forest, the EMBRAPA Experimental Station, in the same city, and the Rio Negro Experimental Farm, in the state of Paraná, where the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) and EMBRAPA carry out experiments.
According to Yeda Maria Malheiros de Oliveira, researcher at the Environmental Monitoring Laboratory at Embrapa Florestas [EMBRAPA Forestry Unit], model forests seek to achieve sustainable development of a land or territory where forests play a relevant role. “For this purpose, they are instrumental in reducing poverty, adding value to non-wood products and providing income alternatives for the population as a whole, in addition to protecting natural resources”, she explained. There are 60 model forests in the world. They are found in 14 countries throughout the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe and occupy over 31 million hectares.
Symposium in Curitiba
In the context of the Sector Dialogues Project, Embrapa Florestas also held a symposium on “Monitoring Forests and Landscapes in Connection with Climate Change”, in Curitiba, State of Paraná, in April. The theme was addressed by German researcher René Beuchle and Italian researcher Dario Simonetti from the Forest Resources and Climate Unit of the Joint Research Centre (JRC).
Embrapa Florestas and the Serviço Florestal Brasileiro (SFB) [Brazilian Forest Service] are developing a methodology for the Unidades Amostrais de Paisagens (UAPs) [Landscape Sampling Units], a geospatial component of the Inventário Florestal Nacional do Brasil (IFN-BR) [Brazilian National Forest Inventory], for the purpose of monitoring the dynamics in land use and land cover and how it relates to climate change. This work counts on the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
In view of the vast experience of the JRC in the matter, Embrapa Florestas partnered with that institution, in 2015, during the 7th Call of the Sector Dialogues Project. “Holding the symposium was essential for the action to proceed. The expertise of one partner in programming specific algorithms for developing the system and the experience of the other partner in matters related to the analysis of landscape and the corresponding approach methodology have contributed to the successful results achieved”, researcher Yeda Maria Malheiros pointed out.
