In June, technicians from the Ministério da Indústria, Comércio Exterior e Serviços (MDIC) [Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services] went on a mission to Europe to learn about the development scenario for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones. The mission is part of the “Study on the Brazilian and European Unmanned Vehicles Industry”, carried out in the context of the 8th call of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, an initiative coordinated by the European Union Delegation to Brazil (DELBRA) and the Ministry of Planning, Development and Management (MP).
During the trip, in Elancourt, France, the researchers visited the headquarters of Airbus, the world leader in the manufacture of commercial aircraft and the European leader in the development of space programs. According to Carlos Leonardo Teófilo Durans, Foreign Trade Analyst at MDIC, “One of the priorities for the delegates was to talk to representatives of a leading company operating in the area of drone systems for military application. We were given the opportunity to see their products, learn how the company sees the development of this industry and their willingness to participate in industrial cooperation projects with Brazil in that area”. Ana Caroline Suzuki Bellucci, General Coordinator for Airspace Complex Industries and Defence at MDIC, also participated in the mission.
The technicians also visited the European Commission headquarters, in Brussels, Belgium, where they accompanied the regulatory process for UAVs in the continent. “We also presented the peculiarities of the current regulatory scenario for this industry in Brazil”, he explains. According to him, this first-hand contact is fundamental, particularly due to the fact that this technology is becoming more and more popular, but still needs regulation, and because Brazil and the European Union are pioneers in this process.
In Ordense, in Denmark, the researchers also participated in the Nordic Unmanned Aircraft Systems Event 2016 (NUAS), one of the main drone-related events in the world. During the event, the delegates learned about products and news from companies such as Sky Watch, Phase One, Schiebel, Drone Volt, UAS Europe and DJI, the largest manufacturer of civil drones in the world.
“The key point of the mission was the fact that it allowed us to compare European regulatory norms with Brazilian norms”, Durans adds. Moreover, the meetings made it possible for the delegates to learn about several companies and to prospect cooperation projects with Brazilian companies, aiming at the possibility of establishing technology transfer agreements, for instance.
