The development of Internet of Things (IoT) application systems was the theme of the mission comprised of technicians from the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações (MCTIC) [Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications] to Europe, in June. The initiative is part of the action “Cyber Policies - Development of M2M/IOT Ecosystem and Brazil-EU Mapping and Comparative Study”, held in the context of the 8th Call of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project.
The mission was comprised of the following delegates: Thales Marçal Vieira Netto, Project Manager at MCTIC, Guilherme de Paula Correia, Alaércio Londe and Maik Deive Nogueira Rabelo, Infrastructure Analysts at MCTIC, and Flávio Andrade Silva, Expert for the Centro de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Telecomunicações (CPqD) [Telecommunication Research and Development Center].
According to Maik Deive, “The Brazilian delegates met with several people who are at the core of the discussions over the Internet of Things in Europe. This meeting will help answer new questions that may arise when designing a public policy in Brazil for developing and implementing IoT solutions in the country”.
The expression IoT refers to a network of devices whose technology is capable of connecting, communicating and interacting among themselves and the environment. The implementation of the IoT in Brazil is under the responsibility of the Câmara de Gestão do Desenvolvimento de Sistemas de Comunicação Máquina a Máquina [Management Chamber for the Development of Machine-to-Machine Communication Systems], a multisectoral entity comprised of government members, the academia and relevant associations.
During the mission, the members travelled to Spain, where they visited the headquarters of Telefônica, Deloitte and Indra, in Madrid, the Santander City Hall and the Libelium headquarters, in Saragoza. In Portugal, the technicians visited the University of Porto and Uninova, in Lisbon.
According to Maik Deive, “in the context of an increasingly global economy, where the companies’ decision-making process is based on the most favourable environment in which they will get a return on their investments, public policies should be aligned with factors encountered beyond their borders. When it comes to technology this becomes more evident; with regards to communication networks, this alignment becomes crucial. Therefore, this mission made it possible to observe the state of the art in the Internet of Things in Spain and Portugal, to consolidate our concepts, change paradigms, learn from past mistakes and contribute to our knowledge of reality”.
