In June, during a mission to Europe, technicians from the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações (MCTIC) [Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications] participated in the Green Week, in Brussels, Belgium. The event presented initiatives on sustainable urbanization carried out by the European Commission and Brazil.
Guilherme Wiedman, Science and Technology Analyst for MCTIC’s Technologies for Sustainable Cities Program, and Cristiano Cagnin, Coordinator of the Study on Sustainable Cities at the Centro de Gestão e Estudos Estratégicos (CGEE) [Centre for Management and Strategic Studies], participated in the mission, held in the context of the 8th Call of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, together with the Ministry of Planning, Development and Management (MP).
The trip also included technical visits to the cities that have won the European Green Capital award, designed to acknowledge sustainable actions in European cities. Guilherme Wiedman points out that “these technical visits provided for a better understanding of the context which enabled certain initiatives to thrive, as solutions based on the nature of different places”.
According to him, this is the right time for these discussions to take place, as they lead to development models that will enable social well-being, while promoting a rational, responsible and efficient use of the natural resources available. The integration among Brazilian and European institutions by means of the Sector Dialogues Support Project, according to Wiedman, has also “revealed a broad range of possibilities for cooperation in this area and a very promising perspective for common interest outcomes in the short and medium-term on themes such as green infrastructure, transition systems, Nature-Based Solutions, among others”.
“In short, the very fruitful interaction between the MCTIC and the European Commission reveals the importance of exchanging experiences and the convergence of efforts around matters directly related to the preservation of the planet’s finite resources and the legacy that will be left to future generations”, he adds.
