Migration and asylum were the topics of a seminar held in Brasília by the National Justice Secretariat, of the Ministry of Justice (SNJ / MJ), on 9 and 10 December, 2014. The event was sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, an initiative coordinated jointly by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra).
The seminar Dialogues for the Construction of the National Network of Integrated Services for Migrants and Refugees aimed to analyse the inclusion of migrants in the labour market and their integration into the community as well as to draw comparisons with models adopted by other countries.
The opening ceremony was attended by the ambassador of the European Union in Brazil, Ms Ana Paula Zacarias, the National Secretary of Justice, Mr Paulo Abrão Jr, and the director of the Ministry of Justice’s Department of Foreign Affairs, Mr João Guilherme Granja Xavier. "Moving forward on the reform of immigration policy is one of our priorities. This event is part of that effort, "said Secretary Paulo Abrão.
The Centre for International Migration of the University of Brasilia (UNB) made a presentation about bills of law addressing migration to Brazil. International experts, such as the head of Spain’s Migration and Development Programme and a representative of the Portuguese Council for Refugees, shared their countries’ experiences. Representatives from São Paulo’s city government discussed services to migrants.
The seminar wrapped up the “Cycle of Advanced Studies Justice without Borders 2014” and was the result of a partnership between SNJ / MJ and the European Union. The aim of bilateral cooperation within the sector dialogue on human rights was to strengthen the exchange of experiences and knowledge among countries.
