The EU - Brazil Sector Dialogue on Regional Integration Policies was in the spotlight on Tuesday afternoon (19 March) during the opening of the International Seminar on Regional Policy in the global context - current situation and prospects, as part of the First National Conference on Regional Development. The event took place during the week of 19 to 22 March, in Brasília, and was organised by the Ministry of National Integration, in partnership with the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA).
The opening session of the seminar, which was supported by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, featured four guest speakers, including Ronald Hall, head of the Directorate General for Regional Policy (DG REGIO), Juan Victor Monfort, head of Business in the European Union Delegation in Brazil, and Ana Lucia de Brito Amorim, Secretary of Public Management of the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management. In his address, Mr. Monfort stressed the importance of dialogue on the subject of regional development. "The European Union is a great example of cohesion and regional integration, so I think it is important to reflect on how to make trade cooperation and exchange of experiences operational," he said.
Ms Amorim, in turn, also stressed the importance of information exchange in regional policy. She said Brazil needs to have the EU as an example of regional cohesion and cooperation across regions. She also highlighted the 31 sector dialogues that exist between Brazil and the European Union in several areas, which are strengthening bilateral relations and adding new actors to the dialogue, such as the Ministry of National Integration itself.
After the opening of the seminar, Brazil officially launched its bid to host the Global Conference of the Regional Studies Association (RSA) in 2014. If Brazil wins the nomination, this will be the first time the RSA Global Conference takes place in South America. The RSA secretary, Ms. Sally Hard, explained that the purpose of this event is to "build knowledge networks" through regional discussions , conferences, opinion sharing and innovation.
A panel discussion is scheduled for Wednesday the 20th, under the theme The Impact of the Global Crisis on Regional Policies, which will feature Professor Andy Pike, lecturer on Local and Regional Development at the University of Newcastle, England.
