Between 8 and 22 June 2013, the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) participated in a technical mission to foster exchanges between Brazil and the European Union on the fight against counterfeiting. The head of the Division for Unfair Competition and Counterfeiting Combat, Mr Elton Ferreira Barbosa, represented the Institute in visits to public institutions in Portugal, Spain and Italy, with the sponsorship of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility.
In a setting of intense global trade, in which many goods have their quality warrented or enhanced by distinctive brands, national intellectual property offices have increasingly engaged in combating counterfeits. "The appropriation by international groups of the efforts of fair-playing entrepreneurs through counterfeit is a problem that, in order to be tackled effectively, depends increasingly on interaction between nations", said Mr Barbosa.
Therefore, the mission organised by the INPI sought to exchange experiences with the European Union through meetings, consultations and exhibitions. Discussions were held with more than 30 experts in different intellectual property fields, such as trademarks, geographical indications and software, as well as with police, customs and sanitary and economic surveillance authorities. Among the highlights of the visit were the meetings at the European Centre for Combating Violations of Intellectual Property, based at the Oficina de Armonización del Mercado Interior (OAMI ) – a European authority - and at the national offices of the countries visited, all of which have a great cultural affinity with Brazil.
As an extension of this work, the institutions visited will maintain permanent contact with the INPI on their programmes to combat counterfeiting. "We also have a great interest in the project’s next Call, so we can hold, in Brazil, a round of discussions with and presentations from the experts we contacted", said Mr Barbosa.
