On May 28, Brasilia hosted the Workshop on Payments for Environmental Services (PEA), an event sponsored by the Ministry of Environment (MMA) with the support of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. Representatives from the MMA itself, the European Commission, Project consultants and other international partners discussed their experience in PEA and encouraged adherence to this system in Brazil.
First, the Project consultants presented their research on the challenges to stimulate demand for environmental services in the private sector, with a focus on water conservation and carbon sequestration. Then, they analysed Mexicos decade-long experience implementing a PEA programme and how it can be replicated in the Brazilian and European contexts.
Mexico has been an important partner in this dialogue, thanks to its pioneering initiatives in preservation via PEA. So much so that in April this year, MMA staff visited the country to get to know some cooperation projects run by the Mexican government with local conservation funds. "Our goal is to take on board such experiences so as to create our own model," says environmental analyst Ms. Leticia Guimaraes, a member on the Brazilian delegation.
The seminar closed a cycle of activities in the partnership between Brazil and the European Union on Payment for Environmental Services. The parties expressed their satisfaction with the results and optimism about the outcomes expected. "We are moving toward a promising arrangement," says MMAs Director for Policy and Deforestation Abatement, Mr. Francisco Oliveira. "You have to think of new paths for Brazilian policies regarding this matter."
