In November, the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project sent two civil servants from the Federal Secretariat for Internal Control of the Controladoria-Geral da União (CGU) [Office of the Federal Controller General] to Europe, to enhance their knowledge on internal control systems. Victor Godoy Veiga, Audit Director for the Social Area, and Patricia Alvares de Azevedo Oliveira, Chief of Staff participated in the mission.
These civil servants visited the Austrian Ministry of Finance, in Vienna, and the Belgium Ministry of Finance, in Brussels, where they also visited the European Commission Headquarters. “These visits also gave us the opportunity to learn about the internal control systems in place in these countries, share experiences concerning the matter and strengthen political ties”, as pointed out by Patricia Alvares, the person responsible for the Internal Control action in connection with the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Project.
During the mission, the Brazilian civil servants also participated in the Public Internal Control Conference, in Paris, France. The conference dealt with themes such as Principles in Public Internal Control, Optimal Control Environment and Central Harmonisation Function. At the event, Victor Godoy delivered a talk on the workings of the Internal Control System of the Executive Branch of Brazil and the challenges that need to be overcome to improve its efficacy. “I believe that this experience represents a great contribution to our efforts towards improving the working process employed at the CGU. It will also increase the exchange of experiences related to this theme among the countries involved”, said Patricia Alvares.
