The action Promotion of Technical Cooperation in the Field of Intellectual Property between Brazil and European Union, sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, carried out, in September, a mission to the city of Alicante, in Spain. The purpose was to send civil servants from the Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial – INPI [Brazilian Industrial Property Institute] on a technical visit to the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OAMI), an office which registers trademarks and industrial design within the European Union and associated countries.
The mission comprised the operating officer, Fernando Cassibi de Souza, deputy head of the Division for Cooperation with Multilateral Organizations of the General Coordination Office for International Cooperation; Jaime Neiva Miranda de Souza, head of the Special Projects Accompaniment Division of the General Coordination Office for Information Technology; Matheus Mariani de Souza, technologist in Industrial Property at the Directorate for Contracts, Geographical Indications and Registrations; and Schmuell Cantanhede, deputy director for Trademarks and General Coordinator for Trademarks.
According to Fernando Cassibi, the visit enabled the delegates to collect important information to determine the feasibility of integrating INPI to the international technical cooperation projects managed by OAMI, particularly, the Tmview and Designview electronic platforms, an integrated database of trademarks and industrial designs, and the Tmclass platform which contains terms used to analyze trademarks in several languages. “INPI is analyzing the feasibility of becoming integrated to these platforms. An eventual integration will result in a significant increase in the number of trademarks made available. That’s particularly important to users of the industrial property system and investigators, who often use these tools to assist them carry out search for previous use of names. Finally, it will contribute to reducing the current backlog and the average time required to review an intellectual property application”, he explained.
