The researchers from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) Thales Sehn Körting and Iris Souza participated, between 31 August and 12 September, in an international mission to Ispra in Italy, where one of the units of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) is located. The two experts were shown the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) system, which uses remote sensing to detect and extract information about human settlements.
During the mission, which was funded by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, Brazilian and European researchers tested a set of 45 images with a 5-metre resolution generated by the RapidEye satellite network. "We had preliminary results with a success rate of up to 80%, indicating that the GHSL is a promising method," says Mr. Körting. The region assessed has an area corresponding to the Metropolitan Region of Paraiba Valley and São Paulos North Coast, which includes 39 municipalities in the easternmost corner of the state of São Paulo.
Mr. Körting stresses that the next step will improve the use of the system, so that in the future it may be applied on a set of 25,000 images covering Brazils entire territory. "We can thereby deliver a map of the built-up areas in Brazil," he explains.
This mission is part of an action selected in the seventh call of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra). Two other missions are also included in the action. In May, Mr. Körting was one of the speakers at the fifth edition of GEOBIA (Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis), one of the worlds most important conferences on remote sensing, held in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The action also provides for a second trip of Brazilian experts to the JRC, in order to complete the project and set future directions. The findings will be presented at a workshop to be held at the JRC.
