Marcos Paulo Soares de Freitas, a Technologist at the Coordination Office for Methods and Quality of the Research Office of the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE) [Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics], visited the Instituto Nacional de Estatística (INE) [Statistics Portugal] in Portugal. On that occasion, he assessed possibilities for the adjustment of the Brazilian metadata system to conform to the integration system developed by the INE Metadata System.
The mission was carried out in the context of the 8th Call of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, an initiative coordinated by the European Union Delegation to Brazil (DELBRA) and the Ministério do Planejamento, Desenvolvimento e Gestão (MP) [Ministry of Planning, Development and Management].
According to Jaqueline Manhães, Assistant for the Research Office at IBGE, “the goal of the mission was to obtain as much knowledge as possible about the data and metadata integrated management system, so that IBGE may conform its organizational structure to the new survey processes and improve how the quality of its products is being monitored, in compliance with the Institute’s Code of Good Practices”.
“IBGE has worked hard to define actions aiming at implementing techniques and standards that will improve and modernize the production process of official statistical information”, she adds.
According to her, the choice to visit INE Portugal took into consideration the institute’s expertise in building integrated systems and the fact that it is actively involved in discussions on European statistics.
