In February, a senior French researcher from the National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture (IRSTEA), in France, André Paquier, visited the Centro Nacional de Monitoramento e Alerta de Desastres Naturais - CEMADEN [Center for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alert], where he met members of the Brazil-Europe Collaborative action for the prevention of Natural Disasters, sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project.
At that time, the French researcher addressed the risks and vulnerabilities caused by urban floods in the context of the European Framework for Flood Control. The following members participated in the discussion, representing the Project and CEMADEN: José Marengo, Head of Applied Research and International Advisor; Mario Mendiondo, General Coordinator for Research and Development; and Marcio Moraes, Javier Tomasella, Conrado Rudorff and Liana Andreson, Adjunct Researchers.
“Research done in Europe has the same limitations and challenges presented by research done in Brazil, where there are more than 4,700 risk areas for urban floods. These elements are gradually added to the discussions and updates for state-of-the-art research work done in Brazil, particularly, at CEMADEN”, said Jose Marengo, responsible for the action that is being carried out as part of the Sector Dialogues Project. In April, a new Brazilian mission will look into these matters in greater detail, during a visit to the Joint Research Centre (JRC). The goal of the visit is to propose future joint actions and research projects.
