At the workshop “Intercâmbio de Conhecimento Ferroviário Brasil-União Europeia” [Brazil-European Union Railway Knowledge Exchange], held on November 4, representatives from the Agência Nacional de Transportes Terrestres – ANTT [National Road Transportation Authority] made a presentation of the knowledge they acquired as a result of the mission that took place between September 21 and 25, in Europe. Five ANTT staff members went on 4-day technical visits whose goal was to learn about the signaling system used by ERA, the European Railway Agency. At the workshop, their experiences were shared with other members of ANTT technical staff and with representatives of companies that are in any way connected to railway transportation in Brazil. The ultimate goal is to standardize the signaling system for Brazilian railways and thus introduce system interoperability.
The workshop was attended by ANTT Executive Officer, Marcelo Vinaud, a representative from the Ministry of Transportation, Soraia Amaral, the Second Secretary for Commercial Matters of the European Union, Adam Wisniewski, and the National Director of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, Marcelo Douglas de Figueiredo Torres. Each of them stressed the importance of the dialogue and the exchange of knowledge achieved with the mission. “The elements that the mission brought about to support the project are very important. In previous missions, the knowledge acquired with the technical visits was not used by ANTT. Now, we want to disseminate this knowledge and listen to opinions about our intended actions”, said Marcelo Vinaud in his opening speech.
This is the first time ANTT participates in the Project. The action proposed by ANTT resulted from a Memorandum of Understanding entered into by the Brazilian Government and ERA, whereby a technical cooperation agreement was executed with that international institution. The technical plan for the application of the European Union legislation to improve the competitiveness of the railway sector by reinforcing the level of interoperability of the railway systems was considered a strategic point of interest by ANTT. Areas of cooperation for the parties involved include technology, operation, regulation and other areas that may be agreed upon.
The workshop “Intercâmbio de Conhecimento Ferroviário Brasil-União Europeia” [Brazil-European Union Railway Knowledge Exchange] is part of the Road Transportation dialogue, and it was the first of three scheduled events held after each technical mission. Their purpose is to disseminate the experiences and information collected.
