In May, Michael Klinkenberg and Manuel Gomez Barbero, researchers at the Joint Research Centre (JRC), a European Commission entity comprised of research and development institutes, visited biotechnology and bioeconomy institutions in the northeast of Brazil. The Europe-Brazil mission is part of the action “The establishment of the Biotechnology Innovation Observatory in Brazil and its interaction with the European Union Bioeconomy Observatory - II”, coordinated by the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações (MCTIC) [Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications] in connection with the 8th Call of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project.
On May 12, accompanied by Maguida Fabiana da Silva, a MCTIC technologist in Science and Technology, Spanish researcher Manuel Gomes Barbero, from the JRC Institute for Prospective Technological Studies, with headquarters in Seville, Spain, and German researcher Michael Klinkenberg, from the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability, located in Ispra, Italy, visited Bioflex 1, a GranBio industrial unit, in Barra do São Miguel, in the State of Alagoas. Bioflex 1 is a Brazilian industrial biotechnology company that creates solutions aimed at transforming biomass into renewable products, such as biofuels and biochemicals. Bioflex 1 is the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in operation in the South Hemisphere.
On May 11, the group visited Embrapa Agroindústria Tropical facilities, in Fortaleza, where they visited the Food Packaging, Biomass and Technology, and Multiuser Natural Product Chemistry laboratories. The purpose of the visits was to exchange experiences among the experts and disseminate initiatives in the northeast region of the country, in order to prospect more cooperation opportunities between the Federal Government and the European Commission.
The European researchers also participated in a panel session on biotechnology and bioeconomy, on May 10, during a workshop held by the Rede Nordeste de Biotecnologia (RENORBIO) [Northeastern Biotechnology Network]. The following MCTIC representatives attended the event: Maguida Fabiana da Silva; Luiz Henrique Mourão do Canto Pereira, General Coordinator for the Biotechnology and Health Division at the Secretaria de Políticas e Programas de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento (CGBS/SEPED) [Secretariat for Research and Development Policies and Programs]; and Fabiano Borba Guimarães, analyst in Science and Technology at CGBS/SEPED. “The goal of RENORBIO is to establish and motivate a group of experts in biotechnology and related areas, in order to carry out research, development and innovation projects in the region”, explained Fabiano Borba.
Manuel Gomes Barbero and Michael Klinkenberg also had the opportunity to visit the MCTIC Centro de Tecnologias Estratégicas do Nordeste (CETENE) [Northeastern Centre for Strategic Technologies], in Recife, State of Pernambuco. According to Fabiano Borba, the proposal put forth by CETENE consists in creating research thematic networks by identifying local and regional opportunities and needs. In order to achieve this purpose, CETENE uses its existing research and development infrastructure in the region, in addition to its competences in the area of human resources.
