Between 22 and 26 September, researchers from the NanoReg project- a EU initiative aimed at regulating the nanotechnology sector - came to Brazil to learn about Brazilian projects in the field and attend a specialist event. The mission is part of the Sector Dialogues action for the Regulation of Nanotechnology-Based Products, sponsored by EU - Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, in turn jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra ).
On 21 September, the European delegation visited the laboratory of the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO). On the 22 and 23, the mission participated in the 1st Workshop on EU NanoReg Integration. Promoted by SisNANO in partnership with the Senai Institute of Innovation and FIEP-PR, the event was held in Curitiba (PR) and brought together experts and researchers from dozens of countries and its keynote was Brazil’s proposed admission to the European NanoReg project – an initiative aimed at regulating the nanotechnology sector with the participation of more than 60 institutions in 15 countries, four of which from outside Europe - Australia, South Korea, Japan and the US. The initiative is coordinated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment of the Netherlands.
On the 24, the European mission was in Campinas (SP) for visits to the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and the National Centre for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM). On the 25, the delegation visited the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCAR), USP, USP in São Carlos and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa).
The participants of the Europe-Brazil mission comprised the representative from the EU’s Directorate-General for Research, Mr George Katalagarianakis; from the Institute of Occupational Medicine in the UK, Dr Lang Tran; from Belgium’s Nanotechnology Industries Association, Dr Steffi Friedrichs; from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development and the Environment of the Netherlands, Mr Aart Dijkzeul; from the Ca'Foscari University of Venice, Italy, Dr Danail Hristozov; from the National Institute of Public Health and Environment of the Netherlands, Dr Wim de Jong; from Spain’s CICbiomaGUNE, Dr Sergio Moya; from the Joint Research Centre, Dr Hermann Stamm; and from the University of Dublin, Ireland, Dr Marco Monopoli.
The European group was welcomed by representatives from the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Mr Flabio Plenz and Ms Anna Tempesta; from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Ms Helena Gressler; from the University of Brasília (UNB), Dr César Grisolia; from the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG), Dr José Maria Monserrat, and from the University of São Paulo (USP), Dr Valtencir Zucolotto. Also comprising the Brazilian research team were representatives from the Nanotechnology Laboratories National System (SisNANO): Dr José Mauro Grajeiro, from InMetro; Dr Nelson Durán and Dr Oswaldo Luiz Alves, from Unicamp (Cigenanotox Network); Dr André Galembeck, from the Centre for Strategic Technologies (Northeast Cetene); Dr Luiz Henrique Mattoso and Dr Caue Ribeiro, from Embrapa; Dr Ary Correa, from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG); and Dr Fernando Galembeck, from the National Nanotechnology Laboratory of the National Centre for Research in Energy and Materials (LNNANO / CNPEM).
This action is part of the 7th Call for Proposals of the Sector Dialogues Support Facility, whose Brazilian partner institution is the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and has the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation as its European counterpart. The initiative comprises the aforementioned EU-Brazil mission and a Brazil-EU mission that will aim to visit institutions involved in nanotechnology research and produce a study to scientifically benchmark the process of characterisation, safety assessment, accreditation and regulation of nanotechnology and products arising from this technology in the European Community and in Brazil, in addition to a workshop to present the findings of the missions and study.
SisNANO
The SisNANO system comprises a network of laboratories dedicated to research, development and innovation in a broad spectrum of nanotechnology activities. Its goals include the mobilisation of companies based in Brazil and support for their activities; the promotion of scientific and technological progress and innovation; the improvement and strengthening of existing infrastructure, and ensuring the Brazilian scientific community as a whole has access to it.
