In the context of the dialogue between Brazil and the European Union on energy policy, the headquarters of the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra) hosted a seminar on Tuesday, 7 May, for EU ambassadors and representatives to get to know a little more about the state-of-the-art of Brazilian mining. In a morning session, the diplomats were shown the huge potential of Brazil, which despite ranking sixth place in ore production worldwide, has only one-third of its territory explored by geological mapping, which suggests there may be several deposits yet to be discovered. The event resulted from the bilateral dialogue on energy policy and is part of the action provided for by the sixth call from the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility.
The seminar was opened by Delbras chief-ambassador, Ms. Ana Paula Zacarias, who highlighted the breadth and importance of Brazilian mining. "Brazil is a country with huge mineral capacity, with a significant production of various minerals. And it has been discussing very important issues such as the role of mining in the economic and social development of the country, the environmental impacts of production, the issue of royalties and distribution and ways to add value to the production chain, " she said.
Mr. Samir Nahass, the representative of the Department of Geology, Mining and Mineral Processing of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (SGM / MME), presented an overview of the Brazilian mining sector, which includes about 80 minerals and in 2012produced the equivalent to US$ 42 billion. Mr. Nahass pointed out that Brazil is open to European investments. He went on to present the 2030 National Mining Plan and its targets for the next few decades, as well as the Mining Regulatory Framework, which is being drawn up by the federal government along with citizen participation. "We need to promote a culture change in the Brazilian mining sector and regulate various issues, such as royalties, for example," said Mr. Nahass. He also assured the diplomats that the federal government will respect all commitments made prior to the entry into force of the framework.
The mining and metallurgical engineer Mr. Joseé Mendo Mizael Júnior gave a presentation on the state-of-the-art of mining in Brazil, in which he detailed key information regarding mineral production in the country, including the production outlook for different minerals and the locations of major Brazilian deposits, highlighting the states of Minas Gerais and Pará "The Brazilian mining sector is an excellent investment option. There are clear growth projections and opportunities abound ", he said to the diplomats.
