Between 1 and 5 July, staff from the National Centre for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Warning (Cemaden) ran a training course in Cachoeira Paulista, São Paulo, to present to Brazilian specialists the flood monitoring operational tools brought from their recent technical mission to Europe. This event is part of an action supported by the 6th Call of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, with the participation of over 50 hydrology experts from various research centers across the country.
The course addressed some of the models and systems for flood and landslide forecasting, monitoring and alert used by the EU’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), such as the European Flood Alert System (EFAS), the European Precipitation Index (EPIC) and LISFLOOD. "These tools are being implemented at Cemaden", said the meteorology operating analyst Diego Oliveira de Souza, one of the event organisers.
Another important aspect discussed was the social impact of flash floods and flooding in general. The Cemaden staff believes that exchanges with EU researchers can enhance the work done by Brazilian institutions and therefore optimise the warnings of and responses to emergency situations. "The knowledge that participants came away with will make a world of difference in their respective operational areas," added Mr Diego de Souza.
According to this analyst and other experts from the National Centre, cooperation was invaluable due to the JRC’s vast experience in flood research. "New tools and possibilities are always welcome. Bringing that applied knowledge is especially important for our centre, which is quite new", said Mr Souza. Cemaden staff also envision possible areas for exchanges in future Project calls.
