Members of the action Brazilian National Forest Inventory: Landscape Analysis and Forest Monitoring in Connection with Climate Change, sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, traveled to Europe in October to carry out research on this matter. Maria Augusta Doetzer Rosot and Yeda Maria Malheiros de Oliveira, researchers working at Unidade Florestas [Forestry Unit] of the Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA) [Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation], and Naíssa Batista da Luz, consultant for the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in connection with the Serviço Floretal Brasileiro (SFB) [Brazilian Forest Service], working at Embrapa Florestas [Embrapa Forestry], participated in the mission. The Projeto Inventário Florestal Nacional (IFN-BR) [Brazilian National Forest Inventory Project] is an initiative coordinated by SFB in partnership with FAO and Embrapa Florestas.
Aiming at improving their knowledge on the systematization of forest resources, particularly with regard to the methodology for the Unidades Amostrais de Paisagens – UAP [Landscape Sampling Units], a geospatial component of IFN, Embrapa Florestas representatives visited several European institutions with expertise in the matter. In Montpellier, France, they participated in talks and meetings at the Joint Research Unit Botanique et Modélisation de L’Architecture des Plantes et des Végétations (AMAP), an interdisciplinary laboratory which carries out researches on plants and plant communities for the purpose of predicting ecosystem responses to actions performed in the environment.
The researchers visited three Spanish cities during the mission. One of the places visited was Bosque Modelo de Urbión [Model Forest of Urbión], in the city of Soria. “Model Woods or Forests represent a voluntary process of participative alliances, whereby individuals and groups with different values and interests work together for the sustainable development of a territory where forests play an important role.” According to Yeda Maria Malheiros, “the Model Forest of Urbión is remarkable because it is the largest continuous wooded area of the Iberian Peninsula”. In Madrid, they met professors of the Forest Engineering program of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid - UPM [Madrid Polytechnic University]. On that occasion, initiatives concerning the IFN-BR were presented, and the possibility of joint research projects between institutions of both countries was considered. They also visited the Catholic University of Ávila, where they received relevant information for the Brazilian project and identified points of common interest for bilateral cooperation regarding landscape assessment.
The trip schedule also included a visit to the Joint Research Center (JRC) headquarters, in Ispra, Italy, to participate in a meeting with local researchers on the results of joint activities carried out in 2015, as the outcome of the action Geotechnologies and Landscape Ecology: Experiences Involving their Application in the Context of National Forest Inventories, part of the 7th Call for the Sector Dialogues Project. “The action carried out with JRC is a landmark in the development of a methodology for the generation of UAPs. Undoubtedly, that partnership should be maintained, in view of the relevance and comprehensiveness of the outcomes”, said Maria Augusta Doetzer. The Brazilian delegates also visited FAO headquarters, in Rome, where they discussed technical aspects of the activities and the possibility of synergy between the platform being prepared by FAO and the tools produced by JRC, in connection with the UAPS. According to Naíssa Batista da Luz, “the visit to FAO was fundamental to confirm the adequacy of the methodology being developed, which we believe is successful, and also in view of prospective joint work involving different institutions”.
The last visit made by the mission delegates was to Georg-August-Universität, in Göttingen, Germany. There, the Brazilian researchers participated in a workshop with professor Christoph Kleinn, one of the most distinguished experts in remote sensing applied to landscaping, with a focus on the forest component.
