Between 18 and 20 June, the Ministry of Environment (MMA) held in Brasilia the second workshop on The Role of Biological Collections in the Context of the Nagoya Protocol, as part of the exchanges between Brazil and the European Union on access to genetic resources. Supported by the Foundation for Scientific and Technological Enterprises (Finatec/UNB) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa), the event brought together curators and researchers of biological collections in Brazil and Europe for a dialogue on the most current issues in this field.
Participants began by providing an overview of Brazilian and European collections, and how legislation and public policy work in addressing access to those resources in both regions. The transfer of genetic material between collections was also debated, with a focus on the tracking of such movements.
"Our goal was to create an opportunity for discussion of the Nagoya Protocol, to pose questions, discuss technical issues and the steps that will be taken by biological collections once the document is adopted", explained Mr Carlos Potiara, MMA technician. The Protocol aims at the equitable sharing of benefits arising from access to genetic resources, with a view to conserving biodiversity, and both the European Union and Brazil are two major parties to the agreement.
Workshop participants sought an understanding of the challenges brought by the agreement and how they can cooperate towards the goals it sets out. "The event could not have been better. If there is closer contact between curators and scientists in Brazil and the EU, there will certainly be more room for cooperation, since in a field such as this no solutions can be produced in isolation ", says Mr Potiara. To end the meeting, Brazilians and Europeans visited a biological collection maintained by Embrapa.
