Technical specialists of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia, Inovações e Comunicações – MCTIC) discussed innovative cyber security actions during as part of a Brazilian mission to Europe in October. The action was conducted under the aegis of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, an initiative of the EU Delegation in Brazil (DELBRA) and the Ministry of Planning, Development and Management (Ministério do Planejamento, Desenvolvimento e Gestão – MP).
Participating in the mission were Cyro Eduardo Ferreira, Science and Technology Analyst at the Secretariat of Computer Policy (Secretaria de Política de Informática – SEPIN-MCTIC), José Henrique Dieguez, General Coordinator of Computer Services and Programmes, and Otávio Caixeta, Director of Digital Ecosystems.
The mission conducted technical visits to the Portuguese Military Academy, the National Cyber Security Centre (Centro Nacional de Cibersegurança) in Portugal, the University of Luxembourg, the European Commission and Cullen International in Belgium and the Nokia-Alcatel Research Centre in France. “We also held meetings with representatives of the Digital Enlightenment Forum (a Dutch organization), and participated in the Cybersercurity Conference in Antwerp, Belgium”, reported Cyro Ferreira.
“The mission was of fundamental importance to enable the collection of information on cyber security strategies, actions and policies in European countries. The issue is of critical significance around the world and the MCTIC plans to develop a more sweeping national policy in this area by interconnecting and expanding on some of the actions currently underway”, noted Mr Ferreira.
According to Mr Ferreira, the MCTIC has undertaken a number of cyber security actions in partnership with the Army, the EU and the US. In addition, the MCTIC analyst argued that the mission was vital for building on current discussion.
“Equally important was the exchange of information, views and good practices on cyber security. The information and contacts proved highly valuable, helping us to frame a more encompassing view of the issue and providing useful contribution for the development of public policies in the area”, concluded Mr Ferreira.
