During the meeting, the Attorney-General of the Republic and president of the CNMP, Rodrigo Janot, said that violence against women is considered abhorrent. "I am sure that this project will have practical effects, because all the agreements signed between the Brazilian Public Ministry and the European Union have always been excellent and successful," he said. He recalled the long historical process by which women achieved some rights, such as the right to vote.
The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Brazil, João Cravinho, revealed that with the agreement, Janot leaves another legacy to his remarkable mandate, which ends in September this year. Cravinho also stressed the importance of this international cooperation highlighting the fact that domestic violence is a problem without borders. In addition, he emphasized that education is important to prevent future generations from being discriminatory and violent. "Education is a fundamental tool for achieving gender equality and equal opportunities". Cravinho also recalled that 2017 is the European Year of Focused Action to fight violence against women.
According to the counselor of CNMP and idealizer of the Joint Statement, Valter Shuenquener, the goal is to improve the reality in Brazil and contribute to enforcing fight against domestic violence in the European Union. He said that a significant characteristic of the project will be reciprocity and complementarity: "there will be no unilateral learning; the two sides will win", he affirmed. In addition, he explained that after six months of the project, an international seminar will be held, and a scientific research will be carried out to show to the Brazilian and European society relevant cases of best practices in dealing with violence against women.
This signature is the first activity within the project approved by the Sector Dialogues Support Facility, within the top-down dialogue on Human Rights, resulting from high-level political dialogues. It consists in accomplishing justice for women, especially in relation to crimes of domestic violence.
The project aims to replicate and disseminate good practices at local and international scale in addressing domestic violence and gender-based crimes. It foresees a mission of Brazilian authorities and technicians to Europe (Italy, Lithuania and Portugal), as well as the reception of European experts in Brazil for working meetings and a seminar to disseminate the project´s results. The activities shall also foster exchange of experiences, in a qualified environment, in the field of domestic violence.
