This week, Brasilia hosted the Seminar Culture & Sustainable Development, organised by the Ministries of Culture and of Planning, Budget and Management, and supported by the EU - Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. Opening the event, held in the auditorium of the Palmares Foundation, Minister of Culture Marta Suplicy highlighted the importance for the countrys growth of the exchanges of information and projects between Brazilians and Europeans.
"It is by sharing successful experiences that we place the necessary importance on culture as an economic driver," said Ms Suplicy. The minister also stressed that the joint efforts by Brazil and the European Union are a means to strengthen ties and enhance a relationship that dates back to the first migration of Europeans to Brazil.
The ambassadors of Barbados, Croatia, Greece, Mexico, Pakistan and Switzerland also participated in the event, as well as diplomats, representatives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and officials from the Ministries of Culture and Planning. Attending the opening ceremony, along with Minister Suplicy, were Ms. Ana Paula Zacarias, EU ambassador to Brazil, Ms. Marcia Rollemberg, Secretary for Citizenship and Cultural Diversity of the Ministry of Culture, and Mr. Hilton José de Almeida, president of the Palmares Foundation.
According to Ms. Rollemberg, one of the objectives of the Seminar Culture & Sustainable Development was to broaden the debate surrounding those two themes, but taking into account another correlation between the two concepts. "We want to show culture in the light of its political, economic, social and sustainable development bias, not only as entertainment or art," she stressed. The secretary also highlighted the role of the bilateral dialogue between Brazil and the European Union as one of the pillars for the development of these strategies: "Cultural diversity is a gateway to this dialogue. Culture is enriched by the perception of others. We live in a time of intense globalisation, which tends towards a hegemonic culture, so this international cooperation is almost a natural development, " she noted.
The debates that followed homed in on the relationship between culture and the three pillars of sustainable development economic and social development and the environment - and the possibility of culture being a fourth pillar. "We were very pleased with the depth of the debate," said Ms. Giselle Dupin, the organiser of the event and advisor to the Secretariat of Citizenship and Cultural Diversity. She added that a collection of texts by the speakers are to be published in Portuguese and English. "There is great interest in enhancing relations between Brazil and the European Union in the field of culture," she concluded.
