The National Nuclear Energy Commission (Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear – CNEN) took part in an international cooperation meeting in July sponsored by EUROFusion (European Consortium for the Development of Fusion Energy) at the Joint European Torus (JET), the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor, located in the United Kingdom.
The meeting addressed extending JET’s operations from 2018 to 2027 and transforming it into an international facility. Brazil, China, South Korea, the United States, India, Japan and Russia also participated in the meeting.
The Brazilian delegation was represented by CNEN’s Director for Research and Development, Altair de Assis, the Director of the Nuclear Technology Development Centre (Centro de Desenvolvimento da Tecnologia Nuclear – CDTN), Waldemar Macedo, and Ricardo Galvão, Brazilian Representative to the Coordination Committee for the Brazil-European Union Agreement on Nuclear Fusion.
The event was held as part of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, a joint initiative of the European Union Delegation in Brazil (DELBRA) and the Brazilian Ministry of Planning, Development and Management (Ministério do Planejamento, Desenvolvimento e Gestão – MP).
Ricardo Galvão commented that the meeting had served to define the basic guidelines for extending JET’s operations. “Establishment of a working group was proposed to detail the international cooperation.” The participating countries will appoint the working group’s members by September.
