The EU Delegation in Brazil (Delbra), the Human Rights Secretariat of the Presidency (SDH) and the Government of the Federal District (GDF) jointly organised the Junior Eurocup 2014, on April 26. Held at the sports courts of Brasília’s City Park, the tournament was one of the activities of the programme Futuro em Jogo: pelos direitos humanos, pelas crianças, pelo futuro (Future at Stake: for human rights, for children, for the future) which aimed to raise awareness about the importance of human rights and the fight against discrimination through sports and education. The event was open to the public and admission was free of charge.
From 26 March to 17 April, 32 schools located in low-income areas were visited by programme representatives, who brought in games and made presentations on human rights protection. Subsequently, about 350 students from these schools, representing Brazil and the 20 Member States of the European Union, took part in the one-day tournament, which started at 9am and had the finals at 1.30pm. The Junior Cup was sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MP).
The programme also included a drawing competition on the theme of Human Rights. The best drawings from each school were on display at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Centre (CCBB), between 5 and 18 May and the three best works overall received special awards during the European Bazaar of the Cultura Inglesa, held on May 10, in Brasilia,.
