The Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica – CADE [Administrative Council for Economic Defense], the Brazilian antitrust authorities, in partnership with the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, promoted the third edition of the “Workshop on Competition Enforcement and International Cooperation”. The event took place in Brasília, from October 14 to 16, and brought together representatives of the European Commission and nine member states of the European Union, in addition to Brazilian authorities and scholars. The opening ceremony of the meeting was attended by CADE president, Vinicius Marques de Carvalho; the representative of the European Union Delegation to Brazil (DELBRA), Pedro Santos; and the national director of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, Marcelo Douglas de Figueiredo Torres.
Significant results were achieved in the three-day seminar: providing information on the Sistema Brasileiro de Defesa da Concorrência - SBDC [Brazilian Competition Defense System]; expanding cooperation initiatives between CADE and the corresponding authorities from European countries, by strengthening relationships that have already been consolidated and establishing new partnerships; and initiating discussions on contemporary themes, such as the control of concentrations and antitrust investigations, as well as the challenges for international cooperation in the field of law and competition policies.
According to CADE president, the initiative represented an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences in themes related to defending competition. “International cooperation is a key instrument to effectively promote competition in Brazil. That exchange of information with players from the sector, who are in other jurisdictions, whether bilateral or multilateral, is a milestone in promoting the defense of competition. Global challenges deserve global responses”, stated Vinicius Marques.
