A group of five Brazilian experts, coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), was in an international mission in Ispra (Italy) and Toulouse (France) between 12 and 21 September. They participated in a scientific workshop on management of water resources given current climate changes and in technical and scientific meetings and visits to exchange information about work in environmental instrumentation and meteorological forecasts made by Brazil and the EU. The international mission had the support of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra).
The mission was led by the general coordinator for Meteorology, Climatology and Hydrology of the MCTI, Sanderson Piglet, and was attended by representatives of the Ceará Foundation for Meteorology and Water Resources (Funceme), Eduardo Savio Martins; the National Centre for Monitoring and Alerts of National Disasters (CEMADEN), Adriana Cuartas; the Brazilian Research Network on Global Climate Change (RedeClima), Alfredo Ribeiro Neto; and the National Water Agency (ANA), Bruna Mendonça.
On the 15 and 16 September in Ispra, at the headquarters of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the group participated in the scientific workshop "Adaptive Water Management in the face of Climate Change". The event promoted the sharing of experiences and knowledge on strategies and best adopted practices - or to be developed - in Brazil and in Europe in relation to water management when adapting to climate change.
On the 18 and 19 September, the Brazilian representatives made a technical visit to the laboratories of the Meteorological Agency of France (Météo-France). They learned about the boards of operational forecasting, observation systems, research of weather and climate, the areas of climatology (where the project for seasonal forecasting of water resources and the structure of the collection and processing of data on climate were presented), the division of operational hydrology and the hangars where the laboratory aircraft of the French institution are kept.
For the mission coordinator, Sanderson Piglet, Sectoral Dialogues represent a new dynamic of cooperation between the EU and Brazil. "This mission held discussions on new approaches to Adaptive Water Management in the face of Climate Changes, encouraging the exchange of experiences between researchers and decision-makers from the EU and Brazil," he said.
The mission integrates the action supported by the seventh call of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility within the sectoral dialogue on Science and Technology. The Brazilian institutional partner is the MCTI and the JRC is the European one.
