In September, the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, by means of the Joint Actions for Cooperation on Alternative Methods to the Use of Animals, carried out a mission to Europe, in order to enable Brazilian researchers to improve their competence on the matter.
Led by the person in charge of the mission, Luiz Henrique Mourão do Canto Pereira, National Coordinator for Biotechnology and Health of the Secretariat for Research and Development Policies and Programs of the Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação – MCTI [Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation], the delegation was also comprised of Fabiano Borba Guimarães, analyst in Science and Technology at the MCTI; José Mauro Granjeiro, coordinator of the Conselho Nacional de Controle de Experimentação Animal – CONCEA [National Council for the Control of Animal Experimentation] and of the area of Bioengineering of the Directorate of Metrology Applied to Life Sciences of Instituto Nacional de Metrologia – INMETRO [National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology]; Isabella Delgado, Deputy Director of Education and Research of Instituto Nacional de Controle de Qualidade em Saúde – INCQS [National Institute for Quality Control in Health] of the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz – FIOCRUZ [Oswaldo Cruz Foundation]; Kleber Gomes Franchini, director of the Laboratório Nacional de Biociências – LNBio [National Bioscience Laboratory] of the Centro Nacional de Pesquisa em Energia e Materiais – CNPEM [Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials].
These delegates participated in the 51st Congress of the European Societies of Toxicology (Eurotox) which was held in the City of Porto, in Portugal and is considered the most important European event in this field. In this edition, the event emphasized the theme of alternative methods to animal experimentation. The Brazilian delegates presented the Rede Nacional de Métodos Alternativos – RENAMA [The Brazilian Network for Alternative Methods] implemented by the MCTI at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) booth. JRC is a partner of the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project. “The conference allowed mission participants to contact important European authorities in the area and to observe state-of-the-art technology in toxicology, particularly, on the theme of alternative methods to the use of animals”, said Luiz Henrique Pereira.
The Brazilian researchers also went to Ispra, in Italy, where they visited the JRC’s Institute for Health and Consumer Protection and the European Union Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL-ECVAM), an international reference in the 3Rs - reduction, refinement and replacement of animal-based testing. In addition to the exchange of experiences and the knowledge acquired learned during the mission, the practical result of the visit was also considered important. “Laboratory representatives undertook to translate into Portuguese the EURL-ECVAM Search Guide, which is used for promoting international standards for research on alternative methods”, emphasized the head of the delegation.
