Researcher Thales Sehn Korting, from the Image Processing Division of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), participated in a workshop on remote sensing in Ispra, Italy, run by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) between 22 and 24 September, 2014.
The mission was sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra). The action is part of the dialogue on Civil Space Cooperation.
During the event, Dr Korting presented the first results of the image sensing pilot project implemented in the Paraíba Valley (SP), which employs the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL), a system developed by the JRC. "I was also able to learn about other examples of places where the same system was employed, such as Africa, Colombia and China," says the researcher.
Dr Korting points out that the mission enabled exchanges with those responsible for the GHSL system so as to continue collaboration between INPE and the JRC. The idea is to expand processing throughout Brazil in 2015, thus increasing it to approximately 25,000 remote sensing images.
This action also included the participation of Brazil in an international conference on remote sensing held in Greece last May, and a mission to Italy last September to learn about the mapping method used by the European Institute for using remote sensing images.
