The researcher Thales Sehn Korting, from the Division of Image Processing at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), represented Brazil at the fifth edition of GEOBIA (Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis), held in Thessaloniki, Greece, between 21 and 24 May 2014. This renowned event is a major international conference on remote sensing. Dr. Korting presented Brazil’s research into better graphical interfaces for sample selection in image classification to specialists from different countries. His participation in the event was sponsored by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, which is jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra).
Dr. Korting considered his participation at GEOBIA very productive. "I was able to network with researchers from different parts of the world about research prospects and secure new collaborations from overseas. Also, the presentation of our research to the image analysis specialist community enabled me to obtain information and suggestions for improving research methodology, " he said.
According to the researcher, recent breakthroughs in the field of human-computer interaction have enabled the construction of more intuitive graphical interfaces to improve user experience. "In the area of ?remote sensing image classification, the interfaces still need improvements. Therefore, this paper is proposing new methods to build sample selection interfaces for image classification. The idea is to identify changes in the usual sample selection strategies and to create a user-focused method within the different visualisations of each sample, in order to help experts identify the similarities between the segments in the picture," he explained.
Sponsoring his attendance at the conference is part of the Sector Dialogue on Civil Space Cooperation. A second international mission to the EU is scheduled for September, when two INPE scientists will spend two weeks at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) to learn about the mapping method used by the European Institute using remote sensing images.
