The dialogue on biofuels between Brazil and the European Union was the subject of an action involving a Brazilian mission to Europe and an event in Brazil to report on the mission’s findings. The visits by three Brazilian experts took place from 27 to 31 October, 2014, and included institutions that conduct research and work in biofuels and renewable energy. The findings of the mission were presented at a seminar in Brasilia, on 9 November.
The Brazilian delegation that visited England, the Netherlands and Denmark comprised Mr Eduardo Soriano Lousada and Gustavo Lima Ramos, representing the General Coordination for Sector Technologies of the Department of Technological Development and Innovation, in the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and by the expert Paulo Anselmo Ziani Suarez, of the University of Brasilia (UNB).
In England, the Brazilian delegation made technical visits and attended meetings at the Astor University of Birmingham and the University of York. In the Netherlands, the delegation visited the Joint Research Centre (JRC), in Petten, and the Energy Centre of the Netherlands (ECN). In Denmark, the technicians met with the staff of the DONG Energy Head Office, in Copenhagen, and visited Inbicon (DONG Energy) Biochemical Conversion of Lignocellulosics into Ethanol, in Kalundborg,

The action also included a seminar on energy policy at the MDIC auditorium, which was attended by about 40 people from the government, education and research institutions and the industry. Talks were given by representatives of the government, research institutions and companies as well as by independent consultants who reported on the studies conducted during the action supported by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. Discussions on the topic wrapped up the event.
The opening panel comprised the Director of MDCI’s Industrial Competitiveness Department, Mr Alexandre Comin, the deputy-director of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, Ms Luciana Dinah Ribeiro Helou, and the deputy-coordinator of Energy Development Actions of the MCTI, Mr Gustavo Lima Ramos.
The technical presentations in the seminar were delivered by the participants of the MCTI’s mission to Europe, by experts hired by the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility for this action, and representatives of GIZ (German international cooperation agency for sustainable development), UNESCO and Embrapa.
