The action 5G and the Future of Mobile Telecommunications in Brazil and Europe, sponsored by the European Union-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Project, carried out a technical mission to Europe on September 19 to 26, to visit research centers on 5G technology and learn about concrete actions in that area. The Brazilian delegation was comprised of the following members: Éder Eustáquio Alves, from the Ministry of Communications, Professor José Marcos Câmara Brito, from the National Institute of Telecommunications (Inatel), Professor Moacyr Martucci Júnior, from the University of São Paulo (USP), and Fabrício Lira Figueiredo, from the Centro de Pesquisas e Desenvolvimento em Telecomunicações (CPqD) [Telecommunication Research and Development Center].
The mission first visited the 5G Innovation Centre, of the University of Surrey, in Guildford, England, one of the most active and important research groups in the world in that area, ranked second in the world by the journal First Wireless Tech, which chose, in July, 2015, the five leading academic institutions in 5G research in the world. The Brazilian delegates were able to learn how research is being done in that center.
The Brazilian delegation also visited the Center for Wireless Communications (CWC) of the University of Oulu, in Finland. The institution is an international reference in wireless communications, and is very active in the area of 5G networks. Additionally, it has been cooperating with Brazilian research groups. The delegates considered this a very fruitful experience, since it provided a general overview of the existing ecosystem in research centers and of the companies operating in the Information Technology and Communication sector. Additionally, they also learned about the 5G research activities within CWC. “The visit was successful, since all CWC representatives welcomed the idea of establishing joint projects and stressed the good relations already established with Brazilian researchers, Brazilian universities and research centers”, said Eder Eustáquio Alves. At that time a Memorandum of Understanding was executed by CWC and CPqD. This MoU represents the starting point for a new structured partnership program.
The Brazilian delegation also visited the University of Dresden 5G Lab, in Germany, an important research center with relevant performance in the development of 5G networks. This institution is has already been engaged in active cooperation with Brazilian research groups, especially with Inatel. A visiting professor recently had the opportunity to work at the 5G Lab. Reference should also be made to the large number of Brazilian exchange students currently attending the University of Dresden – 136 students – who are beneficiaries of scholarship programs for studies abroad, such as Ciência sem Fronteiras [Science without Borders].
At that institution, the delegates attended a seminar called “5G Lab Academic Day”, in which they had the opportunity to hear professors and European laboratory leaders on the 5G theme. Finally, they participated in a meeting with the event coordinators, professors Gerhard Fettweis and Frank Fitzek. At that meeting they presented the research lines and the main ongoing projects in the area, in Brazil. They also discussed possible future partnerships between Brazilian research centers (Inatel, CPqD and USP) and the 5G Lab. In Eder Eustáquio Alves’ opinion, the activities were fruitful. “We had the opportunity to visit one of the most important European laboratories working on the development of mobile network technologies and to learn a great deal about the matter. Moreover, we created a channel for possible partnerships”, he emphasized.
