Between 5 and 10 October, three Brazilian specialists participated in a mission to Europe to learn about initiatives related to industrial biotechnology and bioeconomy and to attend events in the cities of Delft (the Netherlands), Ghent and Brussels (Belgium), and Turin (Italy) . The action was co-sponsored by the European Union - Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, in turn jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) and the European Union Delegation in Brazil (Delbra).
The Brazilian delegation comrpised two civil servants from the General Coordination of Biotechnology and Health of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), coordinator Luiz Henrique Mourão do Canto Pereira and technologist Maguida Fabiana da Silva, as well as the coordinator of the Strategic Intelligence System of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) , Dr Geraldo Martha Júnior.
The mission programme was proposed with the aim of promoting the exchange of experiences between experts involved in the initiatives of the Centre for Innovation in Biotechnology (OIB), in Brazil, and the Bioeconomy Observatory (BISO) in the European Union, and to showcase some of the state-of-the-art biotechnology and bioeconomy being developed in Europe.
On 6 October, the Brazilian delegation visited the Be-Basic Consortium in Delft (Netherlands). It is a public-private consortium composed of universities, research institutes and Dutch companies that received a special grant from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs to run the Be-Basic programme. The goal of the programme is to develop the know-how and technologies required to stimulate ecologically-balanced and sustainable biobased industrial chemistry.
On 7 October, the group made a technical visit to the headquarters of Bio Base Europe, another European initiative that develops solutions for the biotechnology industry in Ghent (Belgium). On the same day, the party was welcomed in Brussels by representatives of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and DG Research and Innovation , where they discussed possibilities for cooperation in the fields of biotechnology and bioeconomy between Brazil and the European Union.
On 8 and 9 October, the Brazilian delegation was in Turin (Italy) to participate in the Annual Bioeconomy Stakeholder's Conference (TOBE 2014), and the 2nd Bioeconomy Observatory Stakeholders Roundtable, where they were able to envision how the EU has advanced in implementing its bioeconomy strategy (Innovation for Sustainable Growth: a bioeconomy for Europe), presented in 2012.
The 2nd Bioeconomy Observatory Stakeholders Roundtable was an opportunity to better understand the operation of the European Bioeconomy Observatory. During the event, the first pilot of the Observatory website was presented, with details on how it works and what information it can provide.
"The Brazilian mission in Europe was an opportunity to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between Brazil and the European Union with regard to biotechnology and bioeconomy. Furthermore, this interaction will benefit the implementation of the Centre for Innovation in Biotechnology through the exchange of information on methodologies in the light of the experiences of the EU Bioeconomy Observatory, "says technologist Maguida Silva.
Ms Silva highlights that the MCTI and JRC experts involved in this project have an understanding that Brazil and the European Union have common agendas with regard to the development of bioeconomy / biotechnology, and that the two observatories are quite similar and as such may benefit from this interaction. "Thus, there is an interest on both sides to foster continued dialogue and strengthen this cooperation," she says.
The mission is part of the action "The implementation of the Centre for Innovation in Biotechnology in Brazil and its interaction with the European Union’s Bioeconomy Observatory", which was chosen by the seventh call for proposals for the EU - Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility, within the sector dialogue on Science and Technology. Its Brazilian partner institution is the MCTI while its counterpart in Europe is the JRC.
