The Ministry of Environment (MMA), in partnership with the Association of Proprietary Companies of Infrastructure and Private Telecommunications Systems (APTEL) sent a technical mission to Europe on 27 January to exchange experiences with local experts on electricity smart grids. Until 1 February, the Brazilian representatives will visit grid facilities in the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal. They will also meet with experts from the Joint Research Centre, the science and technology laboratory of the European Union.
The Brazilian delegation included: the Superintendent of Research and Development and Energy Efficiency of the National Agency of Electric Energy (ANEEL), Maximum Luiz Pompermayer; the director of Technological Innovation at APTEL, José Gonçalves Vieira; and the technical advisor to the Department of Innovation of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), Dermeval da Silva Júnior. They were accompanied by the head of Projects in Information and Communication Technologies - ICT of the Brazilian Association for Industrial Development (ABDI), Carlos Venícius Frees, an expert from the Department of Climate Change of the MMA, Flávio Santos Gonçalves, and MMA collaborator, Cláudio Lima.
"In addition to the exchange of experiences about the operation of smart grids, we hope to understand more about how smart grids help in reducing the emission of greenhouse gases," said the representative of MMA, Flávio Gonçalves Santos. "Not to mention the contribution of these networks to energy efficiency and the promotion of renewable energy sources," he said.
The participants will be welcomed by Marcelo Massera and Julija Vasil Jevska, representatives of the Joint Research Centre.
The mission is part of a cooperation action in Smart Grids between Brazil and the European Union, as part of the 6th Call of the Dialogue on Energy Policy, of the EU-Brazil Sector Dialogues Support Facility. As follow-ups to this event there will be an international symposium on smart grids in Lisbon, in April, and a seminar in Brasilia, in May, with the participation of European experts in the field.
